Oak National Academy
edtech in the UK
1
PROBLEM
-
Oak National Academy's platform features content from all school subjects for remote learning. It was built in record time, with an impressive amount of content for its 250K daily users. However, the team had not had a chance to review the user experience they built in depth to improve upon their first design.
-
Further, key indicators were not looking good: time spent on platform by existing users and growth of new users were both slumping.

METHOD
1. Research Approach
-
Quantitative Research: Analysis of 400+ text responses from users and non-users on 1) favorite aspects, 2) one thing they would like improved/changed in their experience
-
Qualitative user interviews: 16 interviews with user parents; 3 group interviews with user parents; 4 non-user parent interviews
-
Pupil self-filming: 8 pupils using the platform & showcasing context at home from their perspective
-
Secondary Research: 1) existing Oak National Academy UX, 2) a dozen players in similar space in the UK, 3) academic resources on education and reward systems
2. Presentation of Recommendations
-
Delivered 40-page detailed report on findings + filterable excel list of UX recommendations with various parameters
-
Presented recommendations to key internal stakeholders
3
RESULTS
-
At the end of an intense two weeks of research and strategy development, I delivered a comprehensive set of UX improvement recommendations categorized by impact and ease of implementation.

"The qualitative research and UX recommendations Claire delivered over a short, but intense two weeks were critical to helping us iterate the platform which impacts upon millions of pupils across the UK.”
